Shweshwe is the most iconic and recognisable of all South African prints. Made using a tightly woven cotton it has a stiffness to the new fabric from traditional starching, which washes out  to become a wonderful soft cotton cloth — printed with original designs in a wide variety of colour ways. The name is thought to have come from the swishing sound of the fabric as the women wearing it walked.
