Shweshwe is the most iconic and recognisable of all South African prints.  It is popular with the local men and women for clothing as well as internationally for tableware and soft furnishings. Made using a  tightly woven cotton it has a smaller than average fabric width of 90 cm and a stiffness to the new fabric from traditional starching, which washes out. Printed with original designs in a wide variety of colour ways. The name is thought to have come from the swishing sound of the fabric as the women wearing it walked.
